AI’s Impact on Software Engineering — New Research Examines the Human Cost

A new research paper published on arXiv explores the psychological impact of artificial intelligence adoption in software engineering. The study, titled “The Psychological Costs of Artificial Intelligence Adoption in Software Engineering,” was submitted on September 3, 2026.

Researchers studied software professionals one year after their organization introduced AI into its development workflows. Based on qualitative data from 21 professionals, the study identified several challenges, including accountability anxiety, disruption of professional identity, reduced meaning and satisfaction, increased cognitive workload, and uncertainty.

The researchers argue that AI adoption should be viewed not only as a technological or organizational change, but also as a human transition that can significantly affect software professionals and their work experience.
